Our contemporary geopolitical climate, or some derivation thereof, has been transformed into a dystopian society 500 years in the future for this trilogy. Two peripatetic mercenaries were cast as our saviors with the looming question of where one of their loyalties ultimately lies. Are either worthy of such a moniker? These are the questions we’ve been seeking answers to throughout this series.

The power dynamics between governments and behind the scenes machinations are handled superbly. The romance between Merq and Armise I continue to see as playing second fiddle to the action/adventure storyline. What’s more, I feel like I was told they were in love rather than shown it. A feeling was only exacerbated by the fact that Merq and Armise spend the majority of Powerless apart with Merq traversing his own personal hell...
